On Saturday we went to the Royal Palace with Sokim, one of the workers from Cambodian World Family. We didn’t get to see the King or Queen, but we did see many beautiful buildings. After the Royal Palace we bought banana cakes (our favorite street food) and Sokim bought something that looked rather interesting for us to try. The vendor put some mashed corn on a bamboo leaf and sprinkled it with sugar, something brown, and fresh coconut and handed us another leaf to eat it with. It was absolutely delicious. We learned the Cambodian name so we can find it again. After lunch we walked around Wat Phnom. While I walked around and looked at the monkeys, Whitney talked to a couple of fourteen year boys who ended up wanting her to spend the rest of the day with them so they could practice their English. Whitney politely declined, and we headed to the riverside to sit and talk with Sokim. It was fascinating to hear Sokim talk about Cambodia and her fears and concerns about life in her country. When we asked her about the government, she leaned close to us and quietly whispered that she didn’t like it and that she couldn’t talk about her feelings unless she was in her own home where no one could overhear her. She said that the people are afraid to say anything negative against the government in public because someone will turn them in to the police. That evening we went to another pioneer day celebration and I prepared my talk for Sunday.
